VIDA Intern Projects
We are committed to providing opportunities for students to build their skills and knowledge outside of the classroom, and recommend that students apply the knowledge they've gained from such courses as in the Leadership & Social Change Certificate program.
There is minimum amount of 3 student staff and 5 to 10 project interns hired per year. Like volunteers, paid interns commit and take on leadership roles, but are accountable for major responsibilities in the projects/campaigns they are placed on. The ultimate goal is to build student power and be agents of change.
Participating students will take 10 hours a week of fieldwork, weekly team meetings, training and mentorship. Also students must have completed, or be currently enrolled in our Certificate in Leadership and Social Change.

Eligibility:
For student employment it is recommended to have less than 180 units and minimum of a 2.0 GPA while being a part-time student (6+ units) for a year of internship. However, this can be waived under special circumstances. If students are not eligible for student employment, other arrangements are possible. You DO NOT need to be work study eligible to apply.
Current offered project internships:
This role is designed to offer training, mentorship, and a stipend for De Anza students who have taken extraordinary leadership in projects that promote community college access and success.
Some of those topics include- renter's rights, higher education affordability, immigration, transportation, environment, health and policy issues.

This includes working on VIDA wide events as well as program logistics. Some projects include conferneces, LSC graduation, Project Fair, Open House and others.

Salary:
10 hours per week for a total of $4,200 for academic year.

Public Policy School
The Public Policy School Internship is a year-long internship where students will be trained in legislative and policy advocacy and students will utilize the skills learned to effectively advocate on issues concerning community college students, faculty and staff in California before local, state and federal policymakers.
Interns will learn the intricacies of the legislative process, policymaking as well as become knowledgeable in issues facing California Community Colleges. Interns will become adept at developing and delivering effective messaging on the issues Public Policy School is carrying and become effective policy advocates in the process. The focus of advocacy will be local, regional and state policy, although some advocacy with federal legislators may occur.
We envision that we will hire 4-6 Public Policy School Interns for the 2024-2025 year and will be trained by Political Science instructors Jim Nguyen and Bob Stockwell and Angelica Esquivel from VIDA.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Students will take Poli 17/ICS 27 in the Winter quarter
- Attend regular meetings and trainings
- Conduct research on policies, craft messaging
- Willingness to travel to legislative meetings (although the plan is for mostly/all virtual work)
- Develop and implement logistics for meetings, events
- Maintain records, documents on Google Drive or similar platform
- Conduct legislative advocacy: participation in legislative meetings, crafting persuasive letters, communication with legislative offices, and other advocacy as required
