Role of an APE Assistant and Volunteer
The APE program has trained classroom assistants and volunteers who work with students in carrying out their individualized exercise program. This is a great opportunity for students interested in any therapeutic career or medical profession looking for first-hand experience working with disabilities.
General Guidelines
Opportunities
- Work up to 19 hours per week (paid assistants)
- Work/Volunteer flexible hours on-campus according to schedule/availability
- Earn valuable work experience
Important Information
Minimum Qualifications for paid assistants:
- Currently enrolled in 12.0 units
- Minimum GPA 2.0
Expectations
- Treat all students with respect
- Utilize the break between classes for personal matters
- Arrive to class on time
- Ask questions if unsure of an exercise or situation
- Use proper technique, wear comfortable and appropriate clothing
Responsibilities
- Assist students with their exercise program
- Set-up/take-down/put away exercise equipment
- Notify the instructor or staff of any problems or changes in a student's condition while working in the classroom
- Follow student's exercise program unless modified by the instructor
How to become an APE Assistant or Volunteer
Volunteer of Record
The Volunteer of Record form requires information about the volunteer, supervisor, and division dean. The dean's signature is required at the bottom of the form, which is sent to Risk Management once completed.
LiveScan
The final step for the prospective volunteer is to go to the Police Department at either Foothill or De Anza College to complete the LiveScan (fingerprint).
